Cable Pulling Rope Safety

In any cable pulling system, ropes play a vital role. Therefore, it is critical that you not only choose the right type of rope which will support the weight of the cable, but also to adhere to certain rules and take precautions for safety. Some of these precautions have been given below.

  • Rope safety factor

Experts recommend that a rope is selected which has at least a 4 to 1 ratio between the average breaking strength of the rope and the rated capacity of the cable hauling equipment. This is the minimum required safety factor, although a higher ratio should be used if the pulling rope will be exposed.

  • Best ropes

For industrial uses, and for cable pulling and cable hauling, it is ideal that a low stretch rope is used, made out of double braided polyester. This material is ideal for high force operations, and unlike high stretch ropes, cause less damage, in case of failure. This is because f high stretch ropes fail, they release more tension due to their stretching abilities, compared to low stretch ropes.

  • Inspection and maintenance

Make sure to regularly check the ropes and the cable pull equipment for any signs of damage to the rope, or wear and tear to the equipment. Further, during operations, make sure the ropes are not in contact with any sharp edges, corners, or are being dragged along rough surfaces. These can reduce their durability and result in quicker wear and tear.

Follow these safety precautions and get the best results out of your cable pulling equipment.
